TED Talks

It seems like TED talks has really been gaining some traction these last few years, and for good reason. sun rising meditationone of the most gender stereotyped careers out there is computer programming. It is highly dominated by males. This gender stereotype is being broken down more and more everyday, as more and more females are learning how to code. This article will go over some of the most popular resources that are available to women trying to learn how to code.

Girl Develop it

The most popular resource a girl looking to learn to code is Girl Develop. This is a huge no-profit company that is on a mission to provide resources and tools for females trying to join the world of coding. On the homepage of their website it reads “empowering women of diverse backgrounds from around the world to learn how to develop software.” They are actually certified by the board of education and they provide many ways for woman to finance their coding education. They believe anyone can learn to code and especially women. It was founded by Sara Chipps and Vanessa Hurst. Sara was disappointed by the number of ladies in the coding world and she started Girl Develop It to show girls that making software can be a great career for women. Vanessa is passionate about technology and has a strong belief that coding makes the world a better place.

Girls Who Code

There are other organizations out there dedicated to teaching girls to code. “girls to code” mission is to teach female teenagers how to code. It is shocking that there are very few big fortune 500 companies led by women. The weird part about this is women have been found to use the internet more than men. Girls who code aim to bridge this gap and provide resources for young female students interested in learning how to code. This organization was started in 2012 and is also a non profit organization. The founder is Reshma Saujani and she is very passionate about helping women pursue a career in technology. She has even published her own book called Women Who Don’t Wait in Line.

Black Girls Code

Very similar to the organization girls who code. Black Girls Code is all about helping African American women pursue careers in technology and programming. This organization was founded Kimberly Bryant and started her career in electrical engineering.  She is all about introducing girls to programming and helping them become leaders in the future.

Starting your Own Journey

It is only a matter of time before some girl comes out with the next biggest thing. In fact, it could even by you. There are several resources for both males and females about learning how to code. This means there is no excuse, just pick a resource and start learning.

Online Resource for Learning Code

Posted by on Sep 9, 2013 in Coding | 0 comments

codingAs stated before, this website frequently talks about different ways of pursuing education online. One of the hottest career paths today is programming. Not only does it pay well, but there are several resources online to help you pursue your career and education in programming. This article will go over some of the most useful resources available.

Code Academy

This is one of the most popular resources for learning code. In fact, this is where I first personally started. They can give you a basic overview of languages like HTML, Phython, and Ruby on Rails. I really recommend this site as a good starting point for anyone interested in learning code.  Not only is it free, but it’s very easy to follow along with.

Tree House

In my opinion this would be the next logical step to take after going through the code academy lessons. Tree House is a site you pay for, but the price is well worth it. I particularly like how they have different paths you can take. For example, you can choose if you want to be a web designer or web developer and your lessons will be a little different. They also have course on iphone development, wordpress, and a couple of other things.

Udacity

If you are looking for a more traditional route be sure to check out udacity. This website is sponsored by Stanford and has a lot of videos all about computer science and programming. This is a free resource so anyone can watch the videos.

Gaming

One of the more fun ways to learn code is through code racer. This site takes a unique approach by teaching you languages through gaming. If you already know how to code this will also teach you how to get faster at it. Ironically this service is also brought to the web by the previously mentioned treehouse. As a side note this is a site you will want to visit after you already have a little bit of coding knowledge. It is very fast paced. If you finish code academy you should know enough to play.

Starting your Education

Above are some of the most used resources for learning how to code online. Coding is something that everyone should learn, even if you know the basics. More and more careers are starting to involve some kind of coding technology. For example, it is becoming super beneficial for marketers to learn Html and CSS. These languages are what most webpages are built on. Having a better understanding of how these languages work helps marketers do their job better. It will also help them communicate with the development team a lot better. This is just one example but the possibilities are endless. In my opinion knowing a coding language will eventually be as important as speaking a second language. People will start learning it in high school. It will become a cultural norm.
